Overview of Dosage of CBD
Cannabidiol, a naturally occurring phytocannabinoid found in the resinous flower of cannabis. The therapeutic properties of cannabidiol (CBD) are being tested, phytocannabinoids which are unique to cannabis and results to its therapeutic profile. CBD a safe and non-addictive substance works by mimicking and augmenting the effects of endogenous cannabinoids in the human body. In June 2018 the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved cannabidiol under the brand name Epidiolex for the treatment of two types of severe pediatric seizure disorders known as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. However, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) removed the drug from the Schedule I classification and is now placed under Schedule V. People take CBD orally for anxiety, bipolar disorder, dystonia, multiple scelorosis, Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia among other numerous benefits.
The weight, diet, metabolism, genetics, environment, product consistency makes a standard dosage of CBD impossible. However, there are some dosages set despite this problems. CBD-oil comes in various forms and concentration based on the manufacturer. Most bottles come with their unique user-manual. CBD oil’s work and efficacy is subjective (works differently for each individual).
Due to the subjective nature of the oil’s efficacy, dosages are individual based. There is a unique endocannabinoid system in different individuals. CBD’s mechanism of action is by regulating the endocannabinoid system by blocking various receptors. This is the major reason for the individualized dosage of CBD despite the dosage instructions on the oil.
Genetics has an important role to play when dosing CBD including the tolerance and good health of the patient. The dosage will be based on age; a younger person will not use the same dosage as an older patient. The health status of the patient also comes to play when dosing the drug.
The general standard for CBD oil is to commence with one drop on the first day to determine the reaction of the individual to the drug as it can cause irritation to some people. If there is no reaction, the dose should be increased to 2 drops daily (1drop twice daily) for the first 3 -4 weeks to assess the efficacy of the drug to the patient’s symptoms. However, if no change is observed the dose should be increased slowly. The method of administration is to place the drop(s) under the tongue for 30-90 seconds and let it take its effect.
The specific dosage regimens of CBD for various conditions are as follows:
- Loss of appetite on cancer patients: 2.5mg of THC orally with(out) 1mg of CBD for six weeks
- Chronic pain: 2.5-20mg of CBD with(out) THC orally
- Epilepsy: 200-300mg of CBD orally daily
- Movement problems due to Huntington’s disease: 10mg of CBD/kg orally for six weeks
- Sleep disorders: 40-160mg of CBD orally
- Multiple sclerosis symptoms: cannabis plant extracts containing 2.5-120mg of THC/CBD combination daily for 2-15 weeks. Eight sprays is usually used within any three hours with a maximum of 48 sprays within 24 hours
- Schizophrenia: 40-1,280mg of oral CBD daily
- Glaucoma: single 20-40mg of CBD sublingually. Doses higher than 40mg can increase intraocular pressure.
To calculate how much CBD is in a single dropper which usually holds 1ml of liquid. Once the milliliter (ml) of liquid has been deciphered the formula below can be used:
[Total CBD in bottle] / [Number of milliliters in bottle] = mg of CBD in a dropper
There is no established lethal dose of CBD oil but caution should be taken. If CBD oil is noted to affect an individual in a negative manner then it should be stopped and professional help should be taken from medical personnel.
