Golf Welcomes CBD

Educational, Inspiration, Trends

Many golf fans who regularly tune in for the PGA Majors have noticed a new face on the screen.
But it’s not a new player creating a buzz. It’s the occasional glimpse of players using CBD
products. Everyone was paying close attention to Tiger Woods as he chomped his way through
several pieces of CBD gum during the final rounds of the 2019 Masters Championship. He went
on to claim his 15th Major title. Then a few weeks later at a tour stop cameras focused in on Phil
Mickelson using a tincture dropper to place CBD oil under his tongue in between shots. This is
only the beginning of the CBD wave in golf.

Several big names have already signed on with CBD companies – Phil, Bubba Watson, Brandt
Jobe, Charley Hoffman, Scott Piercy, Lucas Glover and Scott McCarron, to name a few. And
we’ve spotted articles linking CBD to golf in such publications and sites as Golf Magazine, Golf
Digest,, Yahoo Sports, Golf Channel and more.

The PGA Tour decided to allow players to accept sponsorship's from CBD companies following
the January 2019 decision by the World Anti-Doping Agency to remove CBD from their list of
banned substances. The Tour cautioned players in April to be aware that some CBD products
might contain THC, which could show up in drug testing. THC remains on the banned
substances list. In August we received approval for Natural Wellness Organic’s lineup of THC-
free products to be used by tour players.

Why are players of all ages turning to CBD products? By taking a high-quality CBD on a
regular basis, researchers believe it enhances cannabinoid activity which can promote better
physical, mental and emotional health. Many players will say it helps them focus and relax
during rounds, sleep better at night, recover more quickly and feel less aches and pains.
The endocannabinoid system regulates everything from our brain and organs to our immune
system. The body is constantly producing cannabinoids and their receptors. The two types of
receptors are CB1 (nervous system) and CB2 (immune system). As we age our body is less
efficient at producing cannabinoids, which is why there is advantage to supplementing CBD.
This could easily be compared to Vitamin D since older adults are typically deficient and need to
supplement more.

So, whether you’re an avid golfer aspiring for the Champions Tour or a casual player who
simply enjoys getting out on the course, CBD may help your next round among so many other
