Science has proven the positive effect of phytocannabinoids for certain conditions, and it is increasing in demand. But the question is whether CBD oil can be used in pregnant women individually?
CBD and THC are two out of 100 active cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant. While THC leaves a psychoactive effect that makes a person high, CBD keeps the person calm and relaxed. CBD and THC act on the energy, mood regulating ECS in the brain, appetite, but it works differently on CB1 and CB2 receptors. Therefore, the effects of both compounds are different on the human body.
Initially, CBD was rejected by the FDA because of the psychoactive aftereffect left by the THC content. After scientists researched the wide properties of CBD that can be used for medicinal benefits, the FDA legalized CBD-related products. However, under the condition that it should not contain more than 0.3 % THC.
Is CBD Harmless on Pregnant Women?
Most people use CBD oil to relieve insomnia, stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, nausea, after-effects of chemotherapy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, etc. However, there is no definite research stating that CBD is safe for the developing fetus, pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. The FDA is continuing to collect data on the effects of CBD during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Certain studies were done on pregnant animals by giving them high doses of CBD. The results showed problems with the reproductive systems of developing male fetuses. The FDA also believes that some amount of CBD can be transferred to the babies during breastfeeding, which may be harmful to them.
However, statistics show that some pregnant women use CBD for symptoms like –
- Nausea or morning sickness
- Anxiety or stress
- Trouble in sleeping
- Pain in back, feet, legs, etc.
It may not a good idea to consume CBD for any of the reasons mentioned above. The FDA requests women not to use Cannabis or any CBD product during pregnancy or breastfeeding because it can affect the fetus. Experts have mainly studied animals, however, that doesn’t mean it will affect the human body in the same manner. Still, the FDA shows its concern and urges pregnant women to avoid using CBD.
In other words, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists will never recommend CBD oil during pregnancy unless they get satisfying clinical trials reports. The convenience of ordering CBD oil and related products online and the growing demand for CBD products should not be confused with its medicinal approval. If you still want to use CBD oil during pregnancy (externally or orally), it should be discussed with your obstetrician.
